How Local Businesses Get Found in AI Search: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews

How ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode find and recommend local businesses, what Google says about it and a practical checklist.

A year ago, asking an AI assistant to recommend a local plumber or accountant felt like a novelty. In 2026 it is routine. Customers ask ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode and other assistants for recommendations, comparisons and quick answers, and the businesses those tools mention get the call. The question for every local business is simple: when an AI describes your category in your city, does it know you exist?

How big AI search is now

  • Google AI Overviews reached more than 2 billion monthly users, Alphabet said in July 2025.
  • Google AI Mode surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, according to Alphabet's July 2026 update.
  • ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users, OpenAI announced in February 2026.
  • In BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey, 45% of U.S. consumers said they use ChatGPT or another AI tool for local business recommendations, up from 6% the year before.

AI answers also change click behavior. A Pew Research Center study of real browsing data, published in July 2025, found people clicked a regular search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when it did not. Being the source an AI cites, or the business it names, is becoming as important as ranking first.

What Google says about optimizing for AI features

Google's own guidance is refreshingly direct: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special markup or files are needed. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet, and the same SEO best practices apply. Traffic from these features is reported in Search Console under the regular Web search type.

In other words, there is no secret AI hack. The businesses that show up are the ones with clear, trustworthy, well-structured information across the web. If you want the deeper technical background, our answer engine optimization guide covers structured data and content formatting in detail.

How AI assistants decide which businesses to mention

AI tools assemble answers from what they can find and trust:

  • Your website: services, locations, pricing factors, FAQs and policies stated clearly
  • Your Google Business Profile and other listings: categories, hours, services, photos and reviews
  • Reviews: volume, recency and what customers actually say about specific services
  • Third-party mentions: local news, directories, associations, comparison articles and forums
  • Consistency: the same name, address, phone number and service descriptions everywhere

If the information is thin, contradictory or locked inside images and PDFs, an AI has little to work with.

A practical AI visibility checklist

1. Make sure you can be found at all

  • Your important pages are indexed in Google and not blocked by robots.txt
  • Key content is in real text, not only in images or scripts
  • Your sitemap is current and submitted in Search Console

2. Answer real questions in plain language

Write service pages and FAQs that directly answer what customers ask: what it costs and why, how long it takes, which areas you serve, what is included and what makes you different. Lead with the answer, then explain.

3. Be specific

AI answers favor concrete facts. "Same-week bathroom remodel consultations in Orange and Seminole counties" is more useful to an assistant than "quality service you can trust."

4. Strengthen your Google Business Profile and listings

Google is replacing Q&A on Maps with an AI "Ask" feature that draws on business information and reviews, so complete profiles matter more than ever. Our Google Business Profile checklist walks through it.

5. Earn reviews that mention your services

Reviews that describe the actual job, such as "they repaired our AC within a day," give AI systems specific evidence. See how to get more Google reviews the right way.

6. Get mentioned beyond your own site

Local press, chambers of commerce, industry associations and reputable directories all reinforce that you are a real, established business. These are the same signals that help local SEO.

7. Use structured data accurately

Organization or LocalBusiness markup, FAQ content and article markup help search engines interpret your pages. Google does not require special markup for AI features, but accurate structured data supports how your business is understood across Search.

8. Check what AI tools say about you

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode the questions your customers would ask, such as "best family dentist in Orlando" or "who installs EV chargers near me." Note whether you appear, what is said and which sources are cited, then fix gaps and inaccuracies at the source.

What not to do

  • Do not create pages stuffed with city names or AI keywords; that risks Google's spam policies.
  • Do not publish mass-produced AI content without expertise and review. Thin pages help no one.
  • Do not post fake reviews or testimonials, which violate Google's policies and the FTC's rule.

Measuring progress

AI visibility is harder to measure than rankings, but you can track:

  • Search Console impressions and clicks for question-style queries
  • Calls and forms where customers say they found you through an AI assistant (add it to your intake questions)
  • Branded searches over time, which often rise as more AI answers mention you
  • Referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics

Frequently Asked Questions

Make accurate, detailed information about your business easy to find across the web: a clear website with service and FAQ content, complete listings, consistent contact details, genuine reviews that describe your services and mentions on reputable local and industry sites.

Do I need special optimization for Google AI Overviews or AI Mode?

According to Google, no additional requirements or special markup are needed. Pages must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, and standard SEO best practices apply.

Is generative engine optimization different from SEO?

It builds on the same foundations, including helpful content, technical health, reviews and authority, with extra emphasis on clear answers, specific facts and consistent information across many sources that AI systems draw from.

Does AI search reduce website traffic?

It can reduce clicks for some informational searches. Pew Research found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without one. Being cited or recommended in the AI answer helps offset that.

How can I see if AI tools mention my business?

Ask several assistants the questions your customers ask, review which businesses and sources they mention, and ask new customers how they found you.
