How to Get More Google Reviews (the Right Way) in 2026

Policy-safe ways to get more Google reviews, how to reply to good and bad reviews, and the Google and FTC rules on incentives and fake reviews.

Hand holding a smartphone, ready to leave a review

Reviews are the modern word of mouth. They influence whether you appear in local results, whether people click and whether they call. The good news is that most happy customers are willing to leave a review. They just need to be asked at the right moment, in the right way.

Why reviews matter so much

BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey of U.S. consumers found that:

  • 97% read reviews when researching local businesses, and 41% always do.
  • 74% only consider reviews written in the last three months.
  • 68% require a rating of at least four stars before using a business.
  • 89% expect business owners to respond to reviews.

Google also lists review count and ratings among the factors that can help local ranking. Recency, volume and replies all matter.

The rules you must follow

Getting this wrong can cost far more than a few missing reviews.

Google's policies

Google prohibits:

  • Paying for reviews, directly or in kind, or offering any incentive for them
  • Selectively asking only happy customers for reviews (review gating) or discouraging negative ones
  • Reviews from employees, owners or others with a conflict of interest, and review quotas for staff
  • Fake reviews of any kind

When Google detects fake engagement, it can remove reviews, block new reviews for a period, unpublish existing reviews and show customers a warning on the profile.

The FTC rule on reviews and testimonials

The Federal Trade Commission's Rule on the Use of Consumer Reviews and Testimonials took effect on October 21, 2024. It bans, among other things, fake reviews and testimonials (including AI-generated ones), compensation conditioned on a positive or negative review, undisclosed insider reviews and suppressing reviews through threats or intimidation. Violations can carry civil penalties of up to $53,088 per violation.

Note that Google's policy is stricter than the FTC's: even a neutral incentive offered to every reviewer violates Google's rules.

Seven ways to get more genuine reviews

Google Business Profile provides a direct review link and QR code. Put it in follow-up texts and emails, on receipts, invoices and printed cards, and in your email signature.

2. Ask at the moment of delight

The best time is right after a successful job, a resolved problem or a compliment. "We'd really appreciate an honest review on Google; here's the link" works better than a generic request weeks later.

3. Ask every customer

Asking only customers you expect to be happy is review gating. A simple rule, ask everyone, keeps you compliant and produces more authentic reviews.

4. Automate the follow-up

Connect your CRM or scheduling software to send a review request after each completed job, with one polite reminder. Our guide to choosing a CRM covers automation.

5. Make it personal

Customers respond to people, not brands. Have the technician, stylist or account manager who served them make the request.

6. Train your team on what not to say

No promises of discounts, no "only if you had a five-star experience," and no reviews from staff or family.

7. Show that you read reviews

Customers are more likely to leave a review for a business that clearly responds. Which brings us to replies.

How to respond to reviews

Positive reviews

Thank the reviewer by name, mention something specific from their review and keep it brief. Vary your replies rather than pasting the same text.

Negative reviews

  1. Respond within a day or two, calmly and professionally.
  2. Acknowledge the experience without arguing in public.
  3. Do not share private customer details.
  4. Offer to resolve it offline with a direct contact.
  5. If you fix the problem, the customer may update their review.

Reviews that clearly violate Google's policies, such as spam, off-topic content or conflicts of interest, can be reported for removal. Unflattering but genuine reviews generally stay.

A simple monthly review routine

  • Track new reviews, average rating and response rate.
  • Reply to every new review.
  • Read negative feedback for patterns you can fix in operations.
  • Share great reviews with your team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I offer a discount or gift for a Google review?

No. Google prohibits offering incentives for reviews, even for honest or neutral ones. The FTC also prohibits compensation conditioned on a review's sentiment.

What is review gating?

Review gating is asking customers how their experience was and only sending happy customers to leave public reviews. Google prohibits selectively soliciting positive reviews.

What happens if a business posts fake reviews?

Google can remove reviews, temporarily block new reviews, unpublish existing ones and display a warning on the profile. Under the FTC rule effective October 21, 2024, fake reviews can lead to civil penalties of up to $53,088 per violation.

Should I respond to every Google review?

Yes, ideally. Most consumers expect owners to respond, and thoughtful replies to both positive and negative reviews show prospective customers that you care.

Can I get a negative review removed?

You can report reviews that violate Google's policies, such as spam, fake or conflict-of-interest reviews. Genuine negative reviews usually remain, so the best response is a professional public reply and an offer to resolve the issue.
